Toyota announced the “GR” series of tuned cars for the Japanese market. Named for its motorsports division, Gazoo Racing, the GR series bring visual and chassis modifications to various Toyota models—including, intriguingly, the Prius—but no more power. Most interesting to us is the 86 GR pictured above.
No, it’s not the turbocharged 86 enthusiasts have been asking for, but it should be a cool package regardless. It gets Sachs dampers, Recaro seat, RAYS forged aluminum wheels, and upgraded brakes, with six-piston calipers in the front and four-pistons in the rear. The 86 GR also gets some bodywork upgrades to reflect its more track-ready intent.
Toyota says the GR will be launched in Japan first, with the 86 GR arriving sometime this winter. Other markets will follow, but it’s unclear if these cars will reach the US. Gazoo Racing doesn’t compete in a US series, with its efforts mainly focused on the WRC and WEC, and its flagship road car, the Yaris GRMN, is only sold in Europe.
But don’t fret if the 86 GR doesn’t make it to the States! Subaru is offering the similarly upgraded BRZ tS that should arrive at US dealers early next year.
